UMontreal Researchers Find Gut Bacteria May Determine AMD Risk

Researchers from the University of Montreal have found intestinal bacteria may play an important role in determining if a person will develop wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Researchers reportedly found changes in the bacterial communities of a person's gut — such as those brought on by a diet rich in fat — can cause long-term, low-grade inflammation within the entire body, eventually promoting diseases such as wet AMD. The investigators believe influencing the types of microbes within a person's gut through diet or other means may impact their chances of developing AMD.

The study was recently published in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine.
