New Clinical Ocular Toxicology Book Identifies 96 Drugs Detectable By Selected Color Vision Testing

Albuquerque, NM – 14 October 2008. A new book, entitled Clinical Ocular Toxicology – Drugs, Chemicals and Herbs, discusses in detail chemical and herbal medicines that cause or may cause adverse ocular effects. Among such effects are those that can be detected by some color vision tests. The book is authored by three eminent university professors of ophthalmology - Frederick T. Fraunfelder MD, Frederick W. Fraunfelder MD and Wiley A. Chambers MD.

Both F.T. Fraunfelder and F.W. Fraunfelder are with the Oregon Health and Science University’s Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon. W.A. Chambers is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Computer Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, DC.

The authors cover a large number of drugs and other chemical and herbal compounds that may induce ocular side effects in humans. Specifically, there are 96 drugs listed well known to be detectable with selected color vision testing, with a further 21 listed as probable and 16 possible, considerably more than were known before the authors had published these most recent findings.

Frederick T. Fraunfelder underscores the criteria for writing the book: “My colleagues and I knew that we had to provide a major revision of the last edition of our book Drug-Induced Ocular side effects. Numerous requests from the eye care community prompted us to include additional data on chemicals and herbal medicines, supported by illustrations of ocular toxicities. This was also the opportunity to expand clinical sections with specific recommendations for physicians as well as other critical information.”

Richmond Products Inc., an Albuquerque-based supplier of eye test solutions, has taken the initiative to highlight this information for the benefit of ophthalmologists and optometrists. The company specializes in all clinically recognized color vision tests, including City University, Dvorine, Farnsworth Munsell (FM), Hahn, Hardy-Rand-Rittler (HRR), Ishihara and SPP. In particular, Richmond’s HRR test is a mandatory part of the ‘student kit’ specified by more US colleges of optometry than any other color vision test. Moreover, worldwide use of the HRR test set has increased substantially. To meet the international demand Richmond now provides the test with practitioner instructions in 15 languages. Richmond also stocks the new Fraunfelder/Chambers book.

Leading expert on color vision Jay Neitz, PhD, who is Professor of Ophthalmology and Professor of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy at the Medical College of Wisconsin, commented most favorably on the new Clinical Ocular Toxicology book: “This book is an essential guide for the busy clinician to help determine if a prescribed pharmaceutical or other chemical is having an adverse affect on the ocular system. We strongly encourage use of the new Fraunfelder/Chambers book at the Medical College of Wisconsin, particularly in my responsibility as head of the College’s Color Vision and Molecular Genetics lab.”
