Topcon Announces Exclusive Availability Of Optimized Spaide Autofluorescence Filters

Topcon Medical Systems, Inc.

PARAMUS, NJ, August 28, 2008 – Topcon Medical Systems, Inc. (TMS), the leading supplier of ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and image management solutions, is pleased to announce the exclusive availability of our new optimized Spaide Autofluorescence Filters.

Developed by Dr. Richard F. Spaide, MD of Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of NY, these new matched interference filters have been optimized to allow for better visualization of fundus autofluorescence. By perfecting the excitation and barrier filters through improved science and state-of-the-art manufacturing processes, the new filters are approximately 20 times more efficient than current generation FAF filters.

The new Spaide filters used exclusively in Topcon IMAGEnet systems require 40% less exposure and produce a much more vivid, more detailed image of the Lipofuscin material that accumulates in the RPE cells of the retina, a key factor in the early detection of eye disease. Using these new filters will significantly improve tonal contrast, while reducing “noise” in FAF images. These filters do not stimulate fluorescein or ICG dyes so photographs can be taken before or after angiography, something that common SLO devices are incapable of. The new Spaide AF filter set is patented technology and will be available exclusively on all new Topcon IMAGEnet camera system purchases and certain Topcon IMAGEnet camera upgrades.

“These new filters will allow our IMAGEnet customers the ability to see FAF detail that other filters are incapable of,” said Lon Dowell, CRA, Director of Marketing for Imaging Products at Topcon Medical Systems.

“We are very pleased to announce this exclusive partnership with Dr. Spaide. His new autofluorescent filter technology will enhance the retinal specialist’s diagnostic abilities and will be a key tool for identifying many eye diseases that previously could not be seen. We look forward to working together to bring this exciting new technology to the marketplace,” summarized Paul Iwasaki, President of Topcon Medical Systems.
