Digital Healthcare, a Wake Forest, NC company specializing in retinal risk assessment for diabetics, announced today that South Jersey Eye Physicians is Retasure's latest reading center and first reading center in New Jersey. The retina service at South Jersey Eye Physicians will provide professional interpretation of Retasure retinal imaging performed in regional primary care and endocrinology offices.
"South Jersey Eye Physicians are the pre-eminent providers of eye care in their region and our diabetic patients will benefit from their experience and commitment to preserving vision," said Scott Sanner, Senior Vice President for Digital Healthcare's North American Operations. "We are very pleased to have on board these physicians that are clearly committed to early detection of vision-threatening eye disease."
South Jersey Eye Physicians has 10 providers and offices in Moorestown, Columbus, Medford, and Cream Ridge, NJ. Their physicians provide general ophthalmic services as well as specialized cataract, glaucoma, pediatric and retinal care.
South Jersey Eye Physicians' retina surgeon Dr. Michael Colucciello will be providing the interpretations of the images taken at the primary care and endocrinologists offices. "Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States in working-age adults," said Dr. Colucciello, a member of the Retina Society and the American Society of Retina Specialists. "The vast majority of cases of severe vision loss due to this disorder can be prevented with timely local and systemic interventions. Screening for diabetic retinopathy is well established and cost-effective; Retasure is helping to lead the way for this cause."
The FDA-approved and HEDIS compliant Retasure program provides a simple, affordable, and non-invasive solution that allows physicians to capture their patients' retinal images during a three to five minute procedure. Images are transmitted over a secure, HIPAA compliant network to an accredited reading center. A state-licensed and board certified ophthalmologist reviews the images and results are returned to the original physician within 72 hours.
There are an estimated 20 million diabetic patients in the US, but only about half have any retinal assessments, despite a high risk of diabetic retinopathy. The National Eye Institute indicates diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among working age American adults. More than a million patients around the world have received a retinal risk assessment using Digital Healthcare software.
