Akaishi et al. prospectively analyzed 13 eyes of seven patients that had an AcrySof ReSTOR IOL (model SA60D3, Alcon Surgical Laboratories) implanted in the capsular bag and a second silicone IOL implanted in the ciliary sulcus.
At one year, mean distance UCVA improved from 20/80 to 20/23. Mean spherical equivalent improved from +4.25 D +1.5 (SD) to +0.15 D plus or minus 0.44 (SD). No patients lost lines of BCVA.
At final follow-up, all eyes had a near UCVA of J1. No patient required spectacles for near or distance vision. Two patients reported mild halos at night with no daytime disability. No other visual disturbances were reported. No interlenticular opacification, decentration or complication related to piggyback IOLs was observed.
