Michigan Researchers Pilot Counseling Program to Help Increase Medication Adherence for Glaucoma Patients

Researchers at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center are piloting a counseling program to help empower glaucoma patients to take better care of themselves and increase medication adherence.

The program, called eyeGuide, is reportedly based on counseling techniques that have worked to double the number of patients with diabetes who gained control of their disease during 12 months of coaching. Rather than talking to patients about blood sugar medications, eyeGuide discusses daily routines for administering glaucoma eye drops.

Based on initial feedback, patients reportedly found being taught eye drop instillation very helpful, and patients welcomed seeing their own test results explained. Patients also liked hearing other patients’ stories about how they overcame the same problems that they themselves were having with their glaucoma drops, such as how to cope with side effects.
