Here’s a quick look at some industry news you may have missed this week.

  • Prevent Blindness has declared October as Contact Lens Safety Awareness Month in an effort to educate the public on the best ways to obtain, care for and use contact lenses (see press release below).
  • Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have received a five-year, $4 million federal grant to study how mobile technology can help African American and Hispanic patients in adhering to their diabetes treatment plans.
  • A new study from the National Association of Vision Care Plans (NAVCP) found more than 87 percent of Americans with a vision benefit plan to get an eye exam within the next 12 months, compared to only 67 percent of those without a vision benefit. And once they have the exam, 67 percent of those with a benefit will get new eyewear compared to 34 percent of those without a benefit.
  • The New York University School of Medicine has reportedly received a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to examine ocular structural and functional changes associated with glaucoma through the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT).
  • And Celloptic Incorporated has also reportedly received an NIH grant, this one for a new holographic 3D camera to be used for fundus imaging.
  • The Coalition for Contact Lens Consumer Choice announced earlier this week that more than 135,000 people had signed its petition urging Congress to reject the Contact Lens Consumer Health Protection Act (CLCHPA) (S.2777).
  • And as part of its support of World Sight Day on October 13th, Orbis is asking people to join its #WithoutSight campaign by uploading a video or photo of them covering their eyes and completing the sentence: "Without sight I couldn't / wouldn't be able to ..."
  • In other Orbis news, Dubai Airports have reportedly raised $340,600 for the eye care charity. The amount is reportedly enough to store sight to 31,000 children suffering from cataracts around the world.
  • Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems (IRIS) has signed an exclusive agreement with HealthFair to provide its diabetic retinal exam (DRE) solution on HealthFair mobile health units across the U.S.
  • A new study has found that Allergan's current New Jersey operations generated a combined annual economic impact of about $732 million, and has generated more than 2,900 direct, indirect and induced jobs.
  • Fujitsu Limited and QD Laser, Inc. have received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award by the CEATEC AWARD Review Panel for their Retinal Imaging Laser Eyewear.
  • Bruder Healthcare launched its line of natural eye care products into the European market through its attendance at the XXXIV Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).
  • Ramesh Raskar, associate professor of media arts and sciences at MIT and co-founder of EyeNetra that allows for on-demand eye testing in remove locations, was recently awarded the 2016 $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize for his work.
  • Start November 1, 2016, Americans applying for or renewing a passport must remove their glasses for their passport photo.
  • According to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more U.S. healthcare workers need to get their annual flu shots, with one in five skipping their yearly vaccination.
  • A new study from the University of Queensland has found your social connections to co-workers can have a significant impact on your overall health and can offer psychological benefits as well.
  • And researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine believe humans have reached their maximum lifespan potential with the ages already attained by the oldest people on record. U.S. babies born today can reportedly expect to live until age 79, compared to 47 for Americans born in 1900.
