UMKC Researchers Receive NEI Grant for Novel Glaucoma Therapy

Researchers at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine Vision Research Center have received an almost $1 million grant from the National Eye Institute to develop a drug that would protect the vision of those with glaucoma.

The grant will be used to fund efforts led by Dr. Peter Koulen, professor and Felix and Carmen Sabates Missouri Endowed Chair at the Vision Research Center. Koulen and his team are reportedly looking to develop a novel therapy that would control the degeneration of nerve cells in the retina caused by glaucoma, resulting in a medication that would potentially be both preventative and therapeutic while complementing current treatments that lower eye pressure.
