UAB Researcher Awarded Glaucoma Research Grant

Dr. J. Crawford Downs, professor of ophthalmology and vice-chair of research for the UAB Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), was recently awarded a $149,000 glaucoma research grant from the BrightFocus Foundation for his work on a new wireless system to measure and control fluid pressure around the optic nerve.

Downs and his team of researchers have reportedly developed a new system that continuously measures and records the IOP in patients using a wireless method. Downs reportedly plans to expand his research to use the same wireless method to measure pressure around the nerve exiting the eye to see if that nerve is important in glaucoma, which could potentially lead to new treatment options.
