Surgeons at John Radcliffe Hospital Perform World's First Robot Eye Operation

Surgeons at Oxford University's John Radcliffe Hospital recently performed reportedly the world's first eye operation using a robot.

The robot was used during the surgery to lift a membrane 100th of a millimeter thick from the retina of the right eye of a 70-year-old patient. According to surgeons, the robot has been designed to eliminate unwanted tremors in the surgeon's hand. It reportedly acts like a mechanical hand, featuring seven independently-controlled motors that are controlled via joystick and touchscreen by the surgeons.

The robotic device was developed by Dutch medical robotics firm Preceyes BV. This surgery was part of the Robotic Retinal Dissection Device (R2D2) trial, which will include 12 patients with operations of increasing complexity.
