Penn Scientists Find Similarities Between Dogs, Humans with Rare Blinding Disease

Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania have found similarities between dogs and humans with the blinding disease Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) brought on by rare ciliopathy Senior Løken Syndrome, which they believe will be crucial in developing therapies to treat the condition.

About 10 years ago, Penn researchers reportedly identified a dog with a similar blinding condition, and in 2013 found the causative gene. Now scientists have furthered their studies and found similarities in how the disease courses between dogs and humans.

Researchers reportedly believe their findings will help them narrow down the therapeutic window to develop therapies to treat the condition in dogs and humans.

The study was recently published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics.
