Here’s a quick look at some industry news you may have missed this week.

  • According to a recent article in Canada's National Post, researchers at the University of British Columbia have found men with glaucoma are more than two and-a-half times more likely to have erectile dysfunction. The researchers reportedly believe inflamed blood vessels may be to blame.
  • A recent study in the journal Optometry & Vision Science found that direct glare conditions from computer screens caused not only increased eyestrain, but also impacted the trapezius muscle — which extends over the back of the neck and shoulders — causing neck pain.
  • The Optical Society (OSA) is currently accepting submissions for a feature issue of Biomedical Optics Express that will celebrate the 25th anniversary of optical coherence tomography (OCT). The submission deadline is October 31, 2016.
  • Ellex Medical (see press release below) will host a series of initiatives addressing the role of laser floater removal (LFR) in the treatment of symptomatic floaters at the Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) in Denmark in September. Ellex will host both a lunch symposium and peer-to-peer information exchange on September 12th, and "Meet the Expert" sessions in their booth September 10-12.
  • Surgical Specialties Corp. (see press release below) will showcase its family of Sharpoint™ products — including single use surgical instruments — at the upcoming ESCRS meeting in Denmark this September. The company recently added several new instruments to the Sharpoint portfolio, including a next-generation guarded knife, ophthalmic synthetic absorbable sutures, and a new family of single-use instruments under the brand name Sharpoint Solo.
  • International Biomedical Devices, Inc. (IBMD) recently closed a convertible debt funding round. The transaction reportedly raised $2.35 million that will be used by IBMD to complete product development, pre-clinical and clinical activities, as well as regulatory filings for CE Mark and FDA 510K approvals for the company’s flagship ApertureCTC Precision Capsulotomy System.
  • EP Global Communications, Inc. was recently notified of an allowance from the United States Patent & Trademark Office on its first patent, US 14/668,957 "System for Contact Lens Wireless Communication."  With this allowance, EPGL now has several patents pending in the new field of "smart contact lenses" and "augmented vision" technology.
  • And a recent study presented at this year's World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (WCA) says children using iPads to distract them before surgery requiring general anesthesia is as effective at lowering their anxiety as conventional sedatives. Additionally, parental satisfaction and quality of anesthesia induction was greater in children who used an iPad prior to surgery.
