Researchers from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear have found a contact lens designed to deliver medications gradually into the eye may help improve outcomes for patients with conditions that require eye drops.
The novel contact lens-based system reportedly uses a strategically placed drug polymer film to deliver medication gradually to the eye. During a pre-clinical model for glaucoma, researchers reportedly found the polymer film delivered medication gradually to the eye at least as effectively, and possibly more so, as daily latanoprost eye drops.
Based on their preliminary data, the researchers believe the contact lenses have the potential to improve compliance for patients, as well as potentially providing better pressure reduction than drops.
