New Study Finds Blindness Ranked Worse Ailment by Americans

A new study conducted by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has found Americans rank loss of eyesight as the worst ailment that could happen to them compared to losing a limb, memory, hearing or speech.

The study analyzed the results of a nationwide online poll of more than 2,000 U.S. adults including non-Hispanic white individuals and minority groups. Of those surveyed, 88 percent believed good vision is vital to overall health. And 47 percent rated losing vision as the worst possible health outcome, ranking it equal to or worse than losing hearing, memory, speech or a limb. Quality of life was ranked as the top concern regarding vision loss, followed by loss of independence.

The study findings were recently published online by JAMA Ophthalmology.
