Researchers Find Unexpected Correlation Between Sleep Apnea and Glaucoma

Researchers from Hokkaido University have found an unexpected correlation between sleep apnea and glaucoma.

Scientists have reportedly been able to successfully measure eye pressure of sleeping patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) symptoms for the first time, thanks to a special skin sensor like a contact lens that monitors patients' pressure changes as they sleep. They found that when subjects stopped breathing, their eye pressure dropped. The researchers believe the optic nerve could be damaged due to hypoxia without a spike in eye pressure, helping to show how those with normal eye pressure levels could still suffer from glaucoma.
