 TV Viewing During Infancy May Be Linked to Autism

An ophthalmologist from Drexel University believes exposing babies to television and videos might be a contributing cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Dr. Karen Heffler, an associate professor of ophthalmology in Drexel's College of Medicine, reportedly hypothesizes that for infants who are already genetically predisposed to autism, watching television and videos may re-wire their brains making them less likely to respond to social stimuli such as facial expressions. Dr. Heffler's theory was published in the June issue of Medical Hypotheses.
