European Scientists Developing Hand-Held Retinal Scanner for Early Diagnosis of Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy

A group of European scientists are developing a coin-sized retinal scanner that could be used for the early diagnosis of glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Called the OCTChip, is funded by the Photonics PPP platform and will be roughly the size of a penny, working via Bluetooth through a user's smartphone or tablet. The product's team reportedly plans to have a first prototype by end of 2017 and targets mass production to begin around 2020.
