Ellex to Host Symposium on Laser Floater Removal at ASCRS
18th April 2016 – Adelaide, Australia. Ellex Medical Lasers Ltd, a global leader in medical devices for the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease, will host a symposium addressing laser floater removal at the upcoming American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) meeting in New Orleans, USA, 6-10 May, 2016.
Although vitreous strands or “floaters” are benign and are often viewed as only a minor annoyance, they are known to have a significant negative impact on the functioning and quality of life on a par with age-related macular degeneration in some patients.1 Laser vitreolysis, also referred to as laser floater removal (LFR), is a minimally-invasive procedure that offers a highly effective option for the treatment of floaters without the risks associated with vitrectomy. Laser floater removal has been shown to be an effective treatment for symptomatic floaters in 75% - 95% of patients with minimal complications.2
There are currently several ophthalmic Nd:YAG lasers on the market; however, Ellex’s Ultra Q ReflexTM is the first and only YAG laser designed specifically for the treatment of vitreous strands and opacities and was designed to overcome the issues associated with conventional YAG laser technology. Namely, poor visualization and inefficient energy delivery. The Ultra Q ReflexTM is now the industry’s leading multimodality YAG laser.
Ellex will host a symposium on laser floater removal at the ASCRS meeting featuring Paul Singh, MD (USA), and Karl Stonecipher, MD (USA), both of whom have extensive experience of laser vitreolysis. During the symposium, which will be held on Saturday, 7 May 2016 at The Marriott Convention Center 859 Convention Center Blvd River Bend Ballroom (Second Floor), Drs Singh and Stonecipher will discuss practical tips and treatment pearls for laser vitreolysis in the treatment of patients with symptomatic floaters.
Dr Singh will also be participating in “Meet the Experts” sessions which will be held at ELLEX EXHIBIT #2517. Dr Singh will be available to share his experience and offer practical advice on laser floater removal from 9:30 – 10:30am and from 11:00am – 12:30pm on both Saturday, 7 May and Sunday 8 May, 2016.

Ellex to Host Ab-Interno Canaloplasty Symposium on at ASCRS
18th April 2016 Adelaide, Australia. Ellex Medical Lasers Ltd will host a symposium on ab-interno Canaloplasty (ABiC), a minimally- invasive glaucoma treatment, at the upcoming American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) meeting in New Orleans, USA, 6-10 May, 2016.
ABiC is an FDA-approved evolution of “tried-and-tested” traditional ab-externo Canaloplasty, a bleb-free procedure that uses a microcatheter to circumferentially viscodilate Schlemm’s canal, the collector channels and the trabecular meshwork in order to restore natural aqueous outflow. ABiC differs from traditional canaloplasty only in that it does not require a tensioning suture to maintain the IOP reduction and the procedure spares conjunctival manipulation for future procedures if required. Like traditional Canaloplasty, ABiC can be performed as standalone procedure and in combination with cataract surgery.
Ellex will be hosting a symposium on Sunday 8th May 5:30pm to 7:00pm at The Marriott Convention Center, River Bend Ballroom (Second Floor) where Mahmoud A. Khaimi, MD, (Dean McGee Eye Institute, University of Oklahoma) and Mark J. Gallardo, MD (El Paso Eye Surgeons, Texas) will discuss the latest clinical results for ABiC. Based on a 12-month case series review of 228 eyes with open-angle glaucoma by Dr Khaimi and Dr Gallardo, the preliminary results for ABiC are very encouraging – at this point similar to traditional ab-externo Canaloplasty. Data from the case series show that ABiC is safe and effective when performed in conjunction with cataract surgery or as a standalone procedure, in both uncontrolled and controlled glaucoma patients to reduce IOP or eliminate/reduce medication use. Dr Khaimi will also present 3-year data from a case series study with traditional ab-externo Canaloplasty.
Drs Khaimi and Gallardo will also be participating in “Meet the Experts” sessions which will be held at ELLEX EXHIBIT #2517. Dr Gallardo will be available to answer any questions on ABiC on Saturday, 7 May, 2016 from 9:30 – 10:30am and from 11:00am – 12:30pm. Dr Khaimi will be available to share his experience and offer practical advice on ABiC from 9:30 – 10:30am, 11:00am – 12:30pm and 2:00 – 3:00 pm on Sunday 8 May, 2016.
