
Late last week, the BrightFocus Foundation announced it was investing $11.7 million towards new scientific research projects looking for cures to macular degeneration, glaucoma and Alzheimer's disease.
The grants were reportedly approved by the BrightFocus Board of Directors after a thorough peer review by a panel of leading scientists in each field. The names of the grant recipients will be announced this summer.

Additionally, BrightFocus recognized five scientists for their work in macular degeneration and glaucoma at a breakfast event coinciding with the 2016 annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). All five awardees are women and include Vera Bonilha, PhD, of The Cleveland Clinic Foundation; Maria Valeria Canto-Soler, PhD, of Johns Hopkins University; Robyn Guymer, MBBS, PhD, of the Centre for Eye Research Australia, The University of Melbourne; Meredith Gregory-Ksander, PhD, of the Schepens Eye Research Institute, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary; and Yvonne Ou, MD, of the University of California, San Francisco.
