Study Finds Link Between Vision Impairment & ADHD

University of Alabama at Birmingham

A new study from researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has found a relationship between attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and vision impairments in children.

ImageBased on a survey of 75,000 children ages 4 to 17, results from the survey suggest an increased risk of ADHD among children with vision problems that are not correctable with glasses or contact lenses relative to other children. According to the study, 15.6 percent of children with vision impairments also have an ADHD diagnosis, compared to 8.3 percent of children with normal vision.

Findings from the study suggest children with vision impairments should be monitored for signs and symptoms of ADHD so if it is present, the dual impairment can be best addressed.

The study was recently published in Optometry and Vision Science.
