New Patent Issued to Clarity MSI for Continuous Intraoperative Wavefront Aberrometry
Pleasanton, CA August 29, 2013 – The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted Clarity Medical Systems, Inc. U.S. Patent 8454162 Optimizing Vision Correction Procedures. This patent includes the capture and display of high-accuracy continuous streaming, real-time refractive wavefront measurements during vision correction procedures, including overlaying data on a live image of the patient’s eye. This latest patent is a continuation of Clarity’s expanding HOLOS™ technology portfolio.
For over twenty-five years aberrometers have been used in eye care to measure patient’s refraction, also known as their prescription. Used by ophthalmologists, aberrometers are an essential tool when accurate refractive measurements of the patient’s eyes are critical, such as LASIK and refractive procedures. The underlying technology employed in these existing aberrometry systems is largely based on decades old technology initially deployed in astronomy. These older technologies typically have slow acquisition rates and only provide a static output, or a single refractive snapshot at a moment in time.
Clarity President and CEO Keith Mullowney says, “We believe this unique capability will provide the opportunity to deploy HOLOS to help ophthalmologists more rapidly and efficiently measure the patient’s refractive state during vision correction procedures, including assisting surgeons as a refractive guidance tool intraoperatively.”
Clarity’s first product application of this unique technology will be for refractive cataract surgery with HOLOS IntraOp™, an intraoperative module that attaches to any standard surgical microscope to assist the surgeon in monitoring and confirming the refractive status of the patient’s eye throughout all phases of the surgical procedure. Additionally, HOLOS IntraOp will allow a surgeon to effectively treat and manage astigmatism. HOLOS IntraOp will now enable cataract surgeons to orient their Toric IOLs using real-time refractive feedback. In femtosecond cataract laser surgery, HOLOS IntraOp will also help to accurately guide to the desired astigmatic surgical correction. Ultimately the goal is to aid the patient in achieving “emmetropia,” better known as 20/20 vision. Worldwide 22 million cataract surgeries are performed annually.
About Clarity Medical Systems, Inc.
Clarity Medical Systems, Inc., develops, manufactures and markets advanced newborn and pediatric ophthalmic imaging systems, guidance and informatics tools that enhance the clinician’s ability to diagnose, manage, and treat eye disorders. The company's RetCam™ product line is helping to improve the quality of eye healthcare in pediatric populations worldwide and is sold to leading Neonatal Intensive Care Units on a global basis. To date, over 1,400 RetCam™ systems have been installed and the eyes of more than a million children have been imaged in over 85 countries. RCRS™ (RetCam Review Software) creates a worldwide network solution providing users the ability to remotely store, retrieve, view, and annotate RetCam™ data and images. Clarity’s latest offering, HOLOS IntraOp™, is a continuous real-time intraoperative aberrometer for refractive cataract surgery. HOLOS IntraOp is designed to provide high-accuracy, real-time, intraoperative refractive guidance and data throughout all phases of surgery to assist physicians in better achievement of their patient’s refractive goals.
