Comparison of PalmScan and IOLMaster Axial Length Measurements

Comparison of PalmScan and IOLMaster Axial Length Measurements

At the 2008 ASCRS meeting, Dr. Ray Oyakawa presented his evaluation of the Zeiss IOL Master compared to the Micro Medical Devices (MMD) PalmScan handheld A-scan. Axial length measurements were evaluated in 74 consecutive eyes in presbyopic IOL candidates. The values obtained by PalmScan immersion ultrasound were comparable to the IOL Master (see slide 7). The PalmScan can be used when the IOL Master cannot get an axial length measurement. Immersion systems like the PalmScan were needed in 4% of cases. This suggests that even if you already have an IOL Master, you may still need a PalmScan to get adequate axial length data on some patients. -Ed.
