Ophthalmic pharmaceutical and medical device company Avedro, Inc., recently announced it has secured $42 million in funding to support its commercial expansion, and that it is launching a comprehensive effort to secure commercial coverage and support reimbursement of Photrexa Viscous® (riboflavin 5’-phosphate in 20% dextran solution), Photrexa® (riboflavin 5’-phosphate dextran solution) and the KXL® System used in corneal cross-linking for the treatment of progressive keratoconus and corneal ectasia following refractive surgery.
In addition to securing the equity financing, Avedro has reportedly opened a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Burlington, Mass. to support the domestic U.S. market and a global supply chain. The purpose-built plant reportedly utilizes 5S, Lean, and 6 Sigma methodologies throughout its operations, and will allow a significant increase in the production volume of Avedro’s corneal cross-linking technologies, which include the Mosaic™ and KXL Systems.

And starting June 15th, Avedro will reportedly be launching the Avedro Reimbursement Customer Hub (ARCH) Program aimed at helping to improve patient access to medically necessary treatment for sight-threatening orphan diseases.
The ARCH program will include a Reimbursement Support Service, including a hotline for questions and resources to assist with the commercial payer appeals process; Patient Assistance Program that supports financially eligible, uninsured patients by providing Photrexa Viscous and Photrexa at no charge; and Prescription Assistance Program to minimize insured patients’ out-of-pocket expenses for Photrexa Viscous and Photrexa in cases of commercial insurance coverage denials.
