Zeiss Announces First SMILE Vision Correction Procedure for Myopia Performed in U.S.

Carl Zeiss Meditec recently announced the first ReLEx® SMILE (SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction) minimally-invasive laser eye surgery procedure has been performed in the United States with the ZEISS VisuMax® femtosecond laser.

Following the recent U.S. FDA approval for this procedure, Dr. Jon G. Dishler at the Dishler Laser Institute in Colorado reportedly became the first to perform this procedure on a patient in the U.S. earlier this month.

According to Zeiss, ReLEx SMILE is a minimally-invasive corneal refractive procedure that can only be performed with the VisuMax femtosecond laser. Through the procedure, surgeons correct a patient's myopic refractive errors using VisuMax to create a thin disc-shaped lenticule within the cornea, which is then removed by the surgeon through a small incision on the surface of the cornea, also created by the laser.

Zeiss is reportedly conducting an IDE trial in the U.S. on astigmatic myopia to further broaden the spectrum of SMILE for more patients.
