Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a technique used to image intraocular tissue structures unreachable by other optical techniques or surgery. An ir laser beam is directed at the patient's eye, with a reference beam aimed at a mirror. Noise light scattered or absorbed by the eye is filtered out, and only coherent light is detected, resulting in high resolution 3D ultrasound-like images of sub surface structures. Spectral domain (aka Fourier domain or spatially encoded frequency domain) OCT machines work much as a spectrometer does, permitting results with just one exposure. These SD-OCT image systems provide image resolutions of 12 megapixels or more, to within 5 microns. The customer should seek devices that incorporate other capabilities such as microperimetry.
