Top OphthalmologyWeb Videos from 2016

OphthalmologyWeb continues to expand its collection of educational videos. The library of presentations covers a wide variety of topics in every ophthalmic subspecialty. There are case studies, “how to” presentations, surgical techniques, expert round table discussions, new product highlights, and didactic talks. The videos that particularly caught my attention this year are summarized below.

Review of the Diopsys NOVA Vision Testing System
This video is a series of interviews with ophthalmologists who have incorporated this in-office eletrophysiology testing technology in to their practices. Drs. Robert Noecker, Mark Latina, Jai Parekh, Farrell Tyson, and William Sponsel discuss how they use the Diopsys NOVA vision testing system. Specifically, they talk about the primary benefits of visual electrophysiology, how it has helped them with early diagnosis, and how it has made a difference in patient outcomes. The take away messages are that ERG/VEP tests objectively diagnosis patients with glaucoma and visual pathway pathology earlier than other technologies, and the tests allow us to follow the response to glaucoma treatment because the technology detects functional impairment of stressed cells prior to irreversible damage. They all recommend this beneficial technology.

DMEK: A Clear Choice for Clinical Outcomes
This video reviews the techniques of DMEK from two cornea practices. First Dr. Vasilis Liarakos discusses the steps of the no touch DMEK procedure (i.e., loading the donor tissue, injecting the graft, and unfolding techniques) with clear video demonstrations. Then Dr. Matthew Feng talks about the evolution of endothelial keratoplasty and focuses on the transition from DSEK to DMEK. He compares their respective advantages and disadvantages and explains in detail the complications and outcomes of these two procedures. Finally, he highlights various steps of the DMEK procedure with photos and videos clips.

The Utilization of New 27g Instrumentation in Complex Diabetic Cases
In this video, Dr. Asheesh Tewari explains 27-gauge vitrectomy technology. He reviews the improvements in the instruments and the benefits of using a smaller gauge system. He demonstrates the advantages and ease of use of the DORC EVA system in various surgical case videos that show the high-flow infusion cannula, hooked scissor, fragmatome, and twinlight chandelier.

Hot Topics in Pediatric Retinal Imaging
This video is a roundtable discussion moderated by Dr. Darius Moshfeghi and including KOL panelists Drs. Paul Chan, Nina Berrocal, Andrew Moshfeghi, and Eric Nudleman. The talk focuses on advances in pediatric teleophthalmology with a review of universal screening for ROP and other diseases. Moshfeghi opens the session with on overview and history of universal screening. He shows the results of SUNDROP screening, which demonstrates an amazing 100 percent sensitivity and 99.8 percent specificity. Berrocal reviews Zika Syndrome and the importance of infant screening. Moshfeghi discusses planning for universal screening with respect to regulatory compliance, infrastructure, logistics, and planning. Chan talks about tele-education, imaging modalities and analysis, training, and who is qualified for reviewing the images. Nudleman closes the session with practical, real-world examples of how he is using the Panocam for longitudinal care.

ION Imaging from Marco
This video introduces the features and benefits of the ION (intuitive, optimized, networked) imaging system. The product is a slit lamp mounted device that integrates an intra-optics beam splitter, adapter, and camera mount in one small piece of equipment so that an Apple iphone can be used to simply and efficiently obtain quality anterior and posterior segment imaging. A proprietary app on the phone enables photos and video to be captured quickly, visualized wirelessly on monitors, and networked to EHR and cloud storage.

Surgical Pearls for Retinal Detachment Cases
This video reviews the surgical steps for different types of retinal detachment repair. Dr. Charles Wykoff beautifully demonstrates his techniques with three short narrated videos that show a recurrent RD with retinectomy, a recurrent RD with retinal fold, and a recurrent RD with dense PVR membranes.

Dry Eye Syndrome — Oculus
This video is a short patient education piece with simple graphics to explain dry eye and how the Oculus Keratograph 5M device can help diagnose and treat this condition. The instrument is a unique corneal topography device because it also produces a number of other measurements such as pupillometry, fluorescein imaging of contact lens fit, and tear film assessment. The tear film analysis includes tear film break-up time, tear meniscus height, meibography, lipid layer thickness, and tear film dynamics with video. The results are printed in an easy to understand tear film scan, as well as a dry eye report that can be reviewed with the patient and incorporated in the medical record.

This is just a short sampling of the many educational videos on the OphthalmologyWeb site. I invite you to explore them as well as the other ones from this and previous years in the archive.
