Tourism, logistics and financial services company HNA Group recently announced the successful completion of 165 eyesight recovery operations during a week-long initiative as part of its Brightness Action program — a charity initiative that funds eyesight recovery treatments for cataract patients across Africa and Asia.
The medical team that performed the 165 cataract surgeries reportedly included two ophthalmologists, 12 medical staff and more than 30 HNA volunteers. Along with the surgery, patients also reportedly received glasses and a financial contribution towards living expenses. This was reportedly the first time the Brightness Action campaign was held in the Yunan region in China.
Since its launch in 2004, the Brightness Action campaign has reportedly provided free surgery for more than 6,500 patients, dispatched over 80 medical teams and 500 medical personnel, and reconstructed 10 ophthalmology hospitals. HNA Group reportedly plans to scale the program across Africa over the next five years, and expects to deliver 5,000 additional cataract surgeries.
