Femtosecond Laser / Ultrashort Pulse Lasers

A Femtosecond Laser is an extremely precise cutting tool which utilizes near IR light to make surface cuts. Also referred to as an “Ultrashort Pulse Laser,” this tool was originally approved by the FDA to be used in refractive surgery. More recently, however, the FDA has expanded the approved applications to include ‘cuts’ in the cornea, which include vertical as well as lamellar cuts. Because the Femtosecond Laser works independently of light tissue absorption, patient anatomy will not interfere with the cuts, making the Femtosecond Laser a more attractive option when compared with the Excimer Laser.
