Excimer Lasers for Ophthalmology Surgery

An Excimer Laser, sometimes called an Exciplex Laser, is a type of ultraviolet laser. This laser uses noble gases and reactive gases to disrupt the molecular bonds of organic surface tissue. This type of laser is different because instead of burning and altering tissue with heat, an Excimer Laser can remove incredibly minute layers or pieces of tissue by disintegration without risking damaging surrounding tissue. This application is useful for eye surgeries like LASIK. This helps with patient recovery time, benefiting an Ophthalmology practice.

There are multiple types of Excimer Lasers; Slit Scanning lasers, Spot Scanning Lasers and Wave-Front Scanning lasers. Depending on which procedure a patient is having done, one Excimer laser might perform that surgery better over another.

CustomVue System: Star S4™ Excimer Laser

CustomVue System: Star S4™ Excimer Laser

Abbott Medical Optics, Inc. (AMO) - VISX

  • Description: Visx Star S4™ Excimer Laser System and WaveScan Wavefront System

The VISX STAR platform's heritage of dependability and performance is well known. The STAR S4 from VISX has taken that reputation to an even higher level. Our latest excimer laser system represents the most advanced laser technology platform available today.

Latest excimer laser system has a faster chair, automatic alignment for both eyes, horizontal alignment capability, multiple treatments and offline programming. Variable Spot Beam Technology: Variable-shaped beams ranging in size from 0.65 to 6.5 millimeters are scanned and offset to allow personalized refractive treatments. Exclusive SmartBeam™ technology adjusts beam size according to treatment, minimizing corneal tissue removal. The Visx® laser utilizes the VSS technology in creating a blend zone in myopic patients receiving1.0 diopter of vision correction. ActiveTrak™ 3-D Active Eye Tracking: The only laser system that can capture all three dimensions of intra-operative eye movements without the requirement of pupillary dilation. Larger Ablation Zones: VSS™ (Variable Spot Scanning) technology adds a blend zone that increases the ablation zone by 51%, increasing the overall diameter of the ablation to 8 millimeters. The Wavefront refractive technology provides a WavePrint™ Map--a unique fingerprint of the patient's vision that displays the refractive errors and aberrations of the eye. The VISX Star S4 Excimer Laser System and WaveScan Wavefront System combine to form the CustomVue™ system.
