Computerized visual acuity test systems have long since supplanted Dr. Hermann Snellen's original chart on the exam room wall. Newer systems incorporate the range of charts (Snellen's original, the tumbling E, ETDRS, red/green, etc.). Nearly all systems have remote controls and bright displays. This allows the clinician to be at the patient's side to fine tune the refraction, while keeping the room lighting dim yet comfortable. Here are a select few of today's visual acuity systems:
