Stereoscopic Vision and Depth Perception Testing

Stereoscopic vision and depth perception testing is important in identifying diseases such as Amblyopia, Strabismus, Suppression and Stereopsis. Stereovision is how each eye may see an object from different angles, but combines these angles to give us a 3D image. There are many stereoscopic/depth perception tests on the market; some are geared more for children while others to adults. Many of these tests ask the patient to identify the “raised” letter, shape or animal to measure depth perception and identify if the patients eyes are working together to identify the intended image. These tests offer intriguing subjects to interest various patients. An Ophthalmology practice should have a variety of these tests on hand if serving patients of varying ages.

Awaya Stereo Test

Awaya Stereo Test

Good-Lite (Formerly Richmond Products, Inc.)

  • Description: The Awaya stereo test was developed to test for both crossed and uncrossed disparities. The Awaya Stereo test employs the more reliable red/green glasses to provide image separation eye to eye. It is not dependent on polarizing spectacles which can be quite tricky to use. The first target is an attractive image of a butterfly which makes the test less fearful and more attractive for children. It also includes an additional full test plate specifically designed for subject-patients with eso deviations. This type of test-plate is not available in any other stereo test.

Lang Stereo Tests II

Lang Stereo Tests II

Good-Lite (Formerly Richmond Products, Inc.)

  • Description: The Lang Stereotest was created to simplify stereopsis screening in children. It is based on two principles: random dots and cylindrical gratings. Lang Stereotest II measures disparities: Moon and Star are 200, car 400 and elephant 600 seconds of arc plus monocularly visible star. In the new Lang II test, the random dots are smaller and less dense. This disparity is finer, namely 200 seconds of arc for the moon and the star, 400 for the car, and 600 for the elephant when viewed at a distance of 40cm. The monocularly visible star helps attract and maintain the interest of small children. It also gives the patient without binocular vision the satisfaction of having seen something at all.

Pop-Up 3D Book

Pop-Up 3D Book

Good-Lite (Formerly Richmond Products, Inc.)

  • Description: An eye-popping 32-page book of 3D images to help children explore the world of stereo vision and nature, and make your exam easier. Images include boy-oriented items such as a tarantula, frogs, fly, tortoise, and myrtlewood bowl and an equal number of girl appropriate items such as sea shells, flowers and garden scenes. While these images are not calibrated for binocular vision testing, they evoke such an immediate response that it becomes incredibly obvious that stereo vision is present. The text is written for ages 10 and older and describes the basics of how 3D imagery works. Most images are viewed with special red-cyan 3D glasses provided with the book. Size: 8 1/2 x 11 inches ( 21.5 x 28 cm).
