OCULUS Vario Cross Cylinder
  • Description: To check astigmatism, to determine the axial position and the cylinder power, two cross cylinders with differing effective powers (±0.5 and ±0.25 diopters) are normally used.

The more powerful cross cylinder (±0.5) is used if a large astigmatic error is suspected and if a visual acuity better than 0.5 cannot be achieved with spherical correction lenses. If an acuity better than 0.5 is achieved with spherical correction lenses, the less powerful cross cylinder (±0.25) is used.

If – during refraction – the acuity is improved to a value better than 0.5, the cross cylinder must be changed. Instead of the more powerful cross cylinder (±0.5), the less powerful one (±0.25) is used.
  • Features: This cumbersome exchanging of the cross cylinders can be avoided by using the Vario Cross Cylinder according to Reiner. By moving two adjusting levers simultaneously, the cross cylinder is adjusted from ± 0.5 to ± 0.25. If the adjusting levers are moved into their original positions, the more powerful combination of ± 0.5 is obtained. The Vario Cross Cylinder permits refraction determination without interruptions.
