This month, I wrote an article highlighting various slit lamp adapters for cell phones. Below I will discuss my personal experience with the Magnifi.
Imagine your busy clinic, rushing from lane to lane, ordering a barrage of tests and sending patients to a different area for photographs. Once these photographs are taken, it may take days to sort through and find them in the system.
You can avoid some of that hassle and time by taking your cell phone out of your pocket, slipping it into an adapter, onto the slit lamp and presto…your picture is in the palm of your hand, easily accessible to immediately share with others for second opinions, referrals, or to show your patient in order to help explain their disease process.
My slit lamp adapter has helped a lot for all of the reasons stated above. I chose the Magnifi, which has worked very well for me. Being at an academic institution, when I have to send a patient downstairs for slit lamp photos it can take 2 hours. Then to find the pictures in a sea of digitography can take eons and cause many headaches.Now I can take my own high quality pictures in less than 5 minutes and immediately download, send or show them to my patient.
The Magnifi fits my iPhone 4S. It mounts onto my Haag-Streit slit lamp perfectly. However, I only have one Haag-Streit in my pod among several Zeiss slit lamps, and the Magnifi does not fit precisely on those slit lamps because there is a white knob less than 1 inch from the end of the eyepiece, which prohibits sliding the adapter into place fully.
When I position the adapter, I need to make some fine adjustments by ‘wiggling’ it around until the image fills the camera screen. It requires some tilting and movement back and forth to get the optimal picture, but once it is in place, the image is fantastic even on the Zeiss slit lamps.

I have used these images in PowerPoint presentations on the podium, to share with referral doctors, and to educate my patients immediately during the exam. The Magnifi happens to be among the more affordable options when it comes to slit lamp adapters, and I find it to be very useful and recommend it to anyone.
