In cataract surgery, there is an ever present need to preserve the delicate structures of the eye while removing an opaque lens. The most modern method is phacoemuslification, whereby the lens is emulsified with ultrasound before being suctioned out. Phacoemulsification systems provide a platform for performing cataract surgery, as well anterior vitrectomy. For a phacoemulsification system, one of the most important features will be the suction/vacuum component. Pumping systems are usually peristaltic or Venturi (aspirating). Some phaco and vitrectomy systems have dedicated microprocessors to measure in-line vacuum pressure. Sonic needles, tips and probes are frequently sold separately.

- Description: The SOVEREIGN® System offers new WHITESTAR™ Technology, which transforms traditional ultrasound into digitally modulated phaco. WHITESTAR™ Technology dramatically reduces the amount of phaco energy directed into the eye while still providing full ultrasound cutting efficiency. Surgeons have noted that nuclear fragments are drawn safely and efficiently to the phaco tip, in a phenomenon that has been termed "magnetic” followability. The result is visibly clearer corneas POD1* without changing technique.
The SOVEREIGN® System is also known for advanced capsular protection. A patented system of microprocessor sensors digitally monitors anterior chamber conditions. The system detects pressure variations at the phaco tip and responds instantaneously, virtually eliminating postocclusion surges.
- Features: System Design:
- 13.8-in (35.0-cm) Flat Panel Color Display Screen 75% larger than 10.5-in (26.7-cm) screens. Easy to read from 10 ft (3 m).
- Host Computer Microprocessor Intel® chipset for medical applications.
- Two PCMCIA (PC) Card Readers Unlimited surgeon settings. System software upgrades in less than 1 min.
- Plug-and-Play Control Card Cage Simple to service and upgrade.
- Customized Surgeon Programs Accepts up to 29 different sets of surgeon parameters and preferences per PCMCIA (PC) card.
- Distributed Hub Design Eight independent computer hubs communicate directly with each other, providing fluidics and phaco responses seamlessly and instantaneously.
- Programmable Power Pole Automatic, programmed adjustment of bottle height during each procedural phase.
- Printer Provides hard copy of case log, use time, settings summaries, and surgeon programs.
- System Cart "Hearth" front storage area for footswitch. Mayo tray is supported by laterally and vertically adjustable articulating arm.
