A new national public opinion survey commissioned by Research!America found a majority of Americans believe discussions about clinical trials should be part of the standard of care provided by health care professionals.
According to the survey, 86 percent of Americans agree that health care professionals should discuss clinical trials with patients diagnosed with a disease as part of their standard of care. And 75 percent reportedly believe taking part in clinical trials is as valuable to our health care system as giving blood, and 90 percent of respondents agreed that clinical trials are important to advancing science.
Nearly two-thirds of respondents — 64 percent — reportedly says a doctor or health care provider is a reliable source for clinical trial information, with 44 percent saying doctors have the greatest responsibility in educating the public about clinical trials. However, 74 percent of survey respondents reported neither their doctor nor other health care professional has ever talked to them about medical research. And a reported 37 percent of Americans said they would "very likely" participate in a clinical trial if their doctor recommended it.
