ASCRS, ASOA Members Advocate for Patients and Practices on Capitol Hill

About 50 doctors and ophthalmic professionals representing the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators (ASOA) met in Washington, DC last week to speak to members of Congress about recent legislation and its impact on their patients and practices.

ASCRS and ASOA members reportedly joined forces with members from other associations through the annual Alliance of Specialty Medicine Legislative Fly-In. A total of 135 physicians and practice administrators from 11 associations reportedly gathered on Capitol Hill to meet with their representatives.

Members of ASCRS and ASOA reportedly met with nearly 55 Congressional members, focusing on two primary issues — they advocated for the need to repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB), and reportedly urged Congress to work with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to provide regulatory relief to physicians and other specialty care providers from burdens associated with onerous program requirements related to prior authorization requirements, program integrity initiatives, narrow provider networks, among others.
