New 3D Display Could Help Eliminate Eye Fatigue Issues with AR Glasses

Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a new type of 3D display that could help eliminate eye fatigue issues currently plaguing virtual reality (VR) headsets and augmented reality (AR) glasses.

The new optical mapping 3D display reportedly increases viewing comfort by producing depth cues that are perceived in much the same way we see depth in the real world. The digital display is reportedly divided into subpanels, each of which is shifted to different depths while keeping the centers aligned. When viewed through the eyepiece, each image appears to be at different depths to the user.

The research was recently published in the journal Optics Letters.
