Surgilum Launches Self-Illuminating Eye Speculum, Announces First Annual Award of Excellence

Ophthalmic surgical product company Surgilūm recently announced the availability of its new Photon Speculum® self-illuminating eye speculum, and launched its first annual Surgilūm Award of Excellence for residents with exceptional skills.

The Photon Speculum is reportedly the first-ever self-illuminating eye speculum, and allows surgeons to see greater details for improved surgical outcomes. The device combines the Photon Illuminator single-use corneal transilluminator that magnetically attaches to the Surgilum Speculum®. When combined in the Photon Speculum, the two devices provide a unique adjustable tangential light that illuminates the eye’s anterior segment with the power of a slit lamp. Surgeons can independently control the tangential light on the Photon Illuminator’s arm, and the speculum's tangential light reportedly helps reduce the risk of retinal phototoxicity.

And Surgilūm announced its first annual Surgilūm Award of Excellence, reportedly honoring graduating residents who demonstrate an aptitude for excellent surgical skills, a compassion for patients, and leadership qualities that can positively impact the future of ophthalmology.

Three residents will reportedly be chosen to receive the award from those involved in Surgilūm's Residency Initiative, which was launched in 2016 at Johns Hopkins University, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Columbia University. Award winners will reportedly be named in June, and each winner will receive a RoboMarker® for their use.
