Researchers Find Link Between Ethnicity and Visual Function in AMD Patients

Researchers at the Singapore National Eye Centre have found differences in visual function when studying age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in three ethnic groups.

The researchers reportedly studied a group of almost 10,000 Chinese, Malay and Indian participants with 590 having early AMD and 60 with late AMD. Investigators reportedly found both early and late AMD were associated with poorer vision-specific functioning (VSF) in Chinese participants, and there was a trend toward worse VSF with increasing AMD severity in Malay participants. However, there was reportedly no association between AMD severity and VSF in Indian participants.

Researchers believe their findings may help warrant culturally sensitive interventions to improve VSF for Chinese and Malay patients with AMD, as well as increased screening for early detection and management.

The study was recently published online by JAMA Ophthalmology.
