Carl Zeiss Meditec Wins IOL Patent Infringement Suit

Carl Zeiss Meditec AG has reportedly won a patent infringement suit regarding a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL).

According to a press release issued by Zeiss, District Court of Düsseldorf/Germany ruled against VSY Biotechnology BV and its exclusive distribution partner Fritz Ruck Ophthalmologische Systeme GmbH, ruling the trifocal intraocular lens offered by these companies infringes the European patent EP 2377493 B1 of Carl Zeiss Meditec. As part of the ruling, VSY and Fritz Ruck were ordered to recall all their trifocal lenses on the market and destroy any lenses in their possession.

Zeiss' patent reportedly protects a special aphakic IOL, with which light can be focused on three focal points — near, intermediate and distance vision — helping to reduce the impact of pupil shrinkage and lens eccentricity.
