Researchers Given Grant to Help Identify Causes of Astronaut Eye Pathologies

A team of researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University were recently given a grant to study computational modeling as a method of determining why astronauts who are in space for extended periods of time are experiencing eye pathologies.

According to researchers, astronauts who are in space for extended amounts of time have a higher propensity for developing pathologies similar to increased intracranial pressure. They believe they will be able to figure out why this is happening through the use of functional computational models of the eye itself, the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system to determine how they are interacting.

Researchers hope by finding a direct cause for the eye pathologies, they can develop tools to halt the process for astronauts in space.
