NIDEK Introduces Pre-Loaded IOL Injection System

NIDEK CO. LTD. recently introduced its SZ-1C preloaded intraocular lens (IOL) injection system.

The SZ-1C reportedly comes preloaded with a clear model, single-piece Aktis SP IOL, made from a stable lens material and innovative lens design. The IOL injection system uses a simple two-step process that includes filling the viscoelastic material and pressing the plunger, which can reportedly be a one-handed operation.

IOLs for the SZ-1C are reportedly designed and manufactured at NIDEK headquarters in Japan. Double-polymerization of monomers during IOL production reportedly decreases the voids in the IOL structure resulting in a stable polymer. This unique structural architecture reportedly inhibits water components from coalescing and reduces the chance of glistening and whitening.

According to NIDEK, the SZ-1C has CE approval for distribution in the European Union, but it not cleared by the FDA for distribution in the U.S.
