UT Southwestern Researchers Find Potential Way to Prevent Vision Deterioration in Space

In an effort to help prevent vision deterioration, researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center are looking at using a vacuum device to lower intracranial pressure in astronauts who spend a long time in space.

According to researchers, a change in vision if the number one health risk for astronauts who spend long periods of time on the International Space Station. Scientists have found the visual issues is likely due to a lack of a day-night cycle in intracranial pressure. They reportedly believe it may be possible to lower an astronaut's intracranial pressure through the use of a vacuum device — such as negative pressure clothing or device — while they sleep.

The study was recently published in the Journal of Physiology.
