UofL Donates Ophthalmic Equipment to Help Train Future Ophthalmologists in Ghana

The University of Louisville (UofL) Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and UofL Physicians Eye Specialists have recently donated surplus ophthalmic equipment to the Friends Eye Center in Ghana, which reportedly provides vision care for nearly 3 million residents of the West African nation and serves as a training site for future ophthalmologists.

UofL staff reportedly found out about the Friends Eye Center after Dr. Henry J. Kaplan, chair of the UofL Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, visited the facility during a medical mission trip several years ago. As much of the Center's equipment was reportedly non-functional, UofL decided to donate to them ophthalmic equipment they were no longer using, including a slit lamp, auto refractor, better surgical microscope, and chairs for both the surgeon and patient.
