 Duke Professor Wins ARVO Ophthalmics Research Award

Dr. Sina Farsiu, associate professor and director of the Vision and Image Processing (VIP) Laboratory at Duke University, has been named the winner of the 2017 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Foundation/Pfizer Ophthalmics Carl Camras Translational Research Award.

Farsiu is reportedly being honored for his research focused on developing mathematical theory and computer software that make imaging systems better for clinicians. Some ophthalmic applications of his work include finding novel imaging biomarkers for age-related macular degeneration, probing the visual system for early warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease, determining personalized treatment for diabetic retinopathy, and developing cost-effective imaging for detecting visual issues in premature infants.

The award is reportedly given to scientists under the age of 45 and honors excellence in research and fundamental scientific discoveries, concepts and novel technologies.
