NHS England to Fund Further Testing of Second Sight Bionic Eye Implant

NHS (National Health Service) England recently announced it plans to provide funding for further testing of the Argus® II Retinal Prosthesis System made by Second Sight Medical Products, Inc.

The testing will reportedly include 10 patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) who will undergo surgery at Manchester Eye Hospital (MREH) and Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2017. The patients will then be monitored for one year, during which NHS England will assess how the implants improve the patients' everyday lives.

NHS England will reportedly fund the project through its Commissioning through Evaluation (CtE) program that is designed to gather evidence for treatments that show significant promise for the future.
