New Study Shows Poor Vision Can Cause Physical Decline, Cognitive Issues in Older Adults

A new study conducted by researchers in Germany has found poor vision in older adults can lead to a decline in both physical and mental activities.

Researchers studied almost 2,400 adults between the ages of 77 and 101, interviewing them every 18 months between 2003 and 2012 to ask them about their physical activities — such as walking, swimming, garden work — and mental activities like reading, working on crossword puzzles and playing card games.

As the study progressed and the visual impairments of research participants increased, researchers found the frequency of participants' physical and mental activities declined. Researchers believe strategies to postpone vision loss may also help delay physical and mental decline among older adults.

The study was recently published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
