IT Carlow to Lead Sports Concussion Pilot Study Using Retinal Imaging

The Institute of Technology Carlow in Ireland will lead a first-of-its-kind pilot study on sports concussion that uses the retina as a potential assessment tool in the diagnosis of concussion.

The two-year project, being funded by the Irish Research Council, will reportedly concentrate on using ocular metrics, monitoring intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements and retinal imagery in 200 contact sports participants aged 18 to 24.

Researchers reportedly hope their work will help provide a more effective method of visualizing the brain to examine it for the effects of concussion.
