New Study Unveils Novel Target Treatment for Thyroid Eye Disease

Investigators from the Department of Environmental Medicine and Flaum Eye Institute of the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Rochester have revealed a novel target for treatment of thyroid eye disease (TED) — such as Graves' disease — and other scarring conditions.

Through their study, researchers focused on studying the activity of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) pathway, and the effects of two AHR ligands, ITE and FICZ. Researchers reportedly found activation of the AHR pathway by its ligands blocks collagen production and myofibroblast proliferation in TED.

The study was recently published in The American Journal of Pathology.
