 Researchers Map XLRS-Causing Gene Mutations

Researchers from The University of Manchester have mapped two gene mutations that trigger X-linked Retinoschisis (XLRS), leading to the potential for new therapeutic treatments.

According to researchers XLRS is a genetic disease leading to a type of macular degeneration for which there is currently no effective treatment. Through the use of cryo-electron microscopy, researchers were reportedly able to identify the location of gene mutations, which the team believes could lead to future genetic interventions and treatments to help limit or prevent damaged caused by XLRS.

The study was recently published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics.
